To understand Google search results, you have to first understand the difference between natural results and sponsored results. Natural search results display “naturally,” i.e. without your having to pay a fee to Google. Sponsored results appear only if you are paying Google a fee to show your link. The image below shows how natural links and sponsored links appear in separate areas in Google search results:

Sponsored results are pretty straightforward: First, you create an account on Google (it’s free) and input the search phrase or phrases you think users will most likely enter into Google to find your site. Then, you pay Google to receive visits from people who search that phrase. The important question is: How many visits will your site get from this service, and how much money is it worth spending on it? Fortunately, Google will estimate the site traffic that will be generated by your search phrase and the cost it will incur before you decide to buy.
In order to get Google's traffic and cost estimate, you will be asked to provide three additional pieces of information:
1. Your website address (so that Google can retrieve its SEO rating and compare it to the phrase that you would like to achieve results on)
2. The maximum amount that you are willing to pay per click for the phrase (so that Google will be able to estimate your link location on their search results page for that term and amount; from that information they will estimate how many hits you will receive and what your monthly cost will be)
3. A maximum monthly budget (so that you will not receive an unexpected invoice from Google)
Common sense applies when you are determining the amount of hits you want versus how much you are willing to pay, but consider these two things:
• The more popular your search phrase is, the more competition you will have for that phrase, and the more you must be willing to pay to attract more visits than your competition.
• On the other hand, the better your SEO rating is in relation to your search phrase, the less you will have to pay per click compared to your competition. This is because Google sees value in sending users to results which actually meet their expectations.
Too complicated? Don’t want to pay? Then focus your energies on natural search results! As we mentioned earlier, natural results can be achieved without paying Google.
Natural results occur when Google gives your site a high SEO (search engine optimization) rating for the phrases entered by the user. Google has an incredibly complicated and sophisticated algorithm for doing this. The exact way the algorithm works is Google’s best kept secret (and it is almost always changing), but the primary theories used are considered known.
The most basic explanation of the algorithm is that Google judges your site based on its content, the amount of traffic received, the amount of time users stay on your site, and the frequency in which other high-rated sites send visitors to your site. (Disclaimer: the previous sentence oversimplifies Google’s method of determining an SEO rating in the same way that you would refer to a Hurricane as “some rain and wind.”) However, the concept shows that achieving natural results on Google requires a strategic plan that integrates Web marketing efforts as part of your overall marketing strategy.
Now that you understand the two primary ways to take advantage of Google to increase traffic on your site, you can begin to think about what is reasonable to accomplish. As a Web developer, we can help you achieve the results you want. The key element in achieving good results is the content you have on your site. Because Google can’t actually send a person to review your site’s content, it is important to ensure that all of it is readable by Google, and constructed in the manner that will best serve the people trying to find you. Think about the likeliest search phrases people will they enter to try to find you, and include those in your website content. This is the best way to begin.
